Creating An Image That Dad will treasure forever – Even if he doesn’t think so right Now – El Paso Portraits Relationship Photography
“Ten little fingers, ten little toes.
Mommy eyes and Daddy’s nose”
Throughout pregnancy, Mom has been the focus of all of the attention because it’s obvious that she’s expecting and Dad has only played a supporting role. Now that baby is here, his role changes to one of partnership – we expect him to take part in feedings, changings, bathing and bonding with his child.
In the first weeks of life, when baby is so small, my goal is to create a relationship portrait with Dad and baby that shows all of the emotion that comes with Dad’s new role in the family. He is no longer just the supporter and defender – he has matured and transformed into a caregiver, as well.
During the newborn session, I usually ask Dad to take off his shirt and hold his newborn next to his skin as in the image above. And I ask him to let baby grasp his finger to show the size of each hand.
Dads (like Moms) can feel really nervous about this, especially if they aren’t prepared for it or if they are first time Dads and aren’t yet comfortable with holding baby in the first days of life.
I find in these situations, with gentle persistence and a little guidance we can capture beautiful moments in time that forever preserve in the importance of Dad and his new role in baby’s life.
