I was so excited when Lacey text me just hours after her little girl, Riley, came into the world a couple of weeks ago.

She couldn’t wait to schedule Riley’s newborn photography session and I couldn’t wait to meet this precious new baby!

Moms are always a little nervous when they come to the studio for the first time with their baby. They are afraid baby will cry, or baby will pee or baby won’t go to sleep so we can get great pictures. And during this newborn photo session, Lacey had the same concerns.

Here are three tips for making your baby’s newborn session go smoothly:

1. If you want sleepy newborn baby pictures like the “Froggy pose” where baby is sitting and leaning forward on her hands, schedule your session for the first 10-14 days of life. This is when they are still “curly and bendy” from being in the womb.

2. Plan to come to the studio BEFORE you feed your baby. It’s okay with me if you feed them at the studio and in fact, I prefer it. Babies will get sleepy right after they’ve eaten and been changed. If baby eats and naps in the car, they will be awake and want to “snack” or “top off” before going back to sleep.

PLUS While you’re feeding your baby, we will have a chance to look over the outfits and props you’ve brought as well as the ones that I have to create a perfect picture for you!

3. Your little angel doesn’t have to be “asleep” to get lots of great pictures. Sometimes, I can just run a finger down their nose which will get them to close their eyes long enough to create an image that looks like they are sleeping peacefully.
