Thankful for life’s little Gifts | Giving Thanks in 2015 | Beautiful Fall Family Photography
After a peacefully quiet Thanksgiving Day, making fudge. Chopping cranberries and walnuts for my favorite Holiday scones, I’m reminded of how blessed I am (and hope, your family is too.)
This time last year, I was sad and alone. I had broken my arm earlier in the year and nearly lost my home & studio. I didn’t even have a vehicle… I had to take the bus to the store – carrying my groceries home – even to the park for photo sessions – yes, 2014 was the worst year of my whole life.

I declared that 2015 would be my best year ever – and so far, it has been. My arm healed perfectly. In May, I got a nice, “new to me” SUV and I’ve been blessed to watch beautiful families and babies grow as I photographed them. While I still do lots of photo sessions in the studio with my new Virtual Background Machine, I’ve been doing Consultations and Portrait Reveals in my clients homes.
Today, Black Friday – when lots of people were braving the crowds in the Mall or shopping for gifts online, I met with one family of 14 for a family session – even though it was cloudy, wet and cold. And much to my surprise, they weren’t the only family in the park. I saw several families taking each others pictures for Holiday cards. And it made me smile.
Before, I might have been jealous, wishing that they’d hired me but the truth is – you just can’t get a GREAT photograph of an entire family of 14 without having some outside help – someone who knows the best places in the park, where the light is right, who can pose your family, make sure they’re all looking toward the camera with a pleasant expression and bring enough energy to make you forget that you’re standing in the cold without a coat!
[pullquote width=”300″ float=”left”]”The Little Gift I Got In Return”[/pullquote] Before meeting up with my clients, I usually drive to and around the site where we’ll have our session. I get out, walk around, and touch the grass with my palm to see if it’s wet. Take some snaps to make sure the light looks right.
Today, I found a visual treat – a beautiful tree whose leaves had turned a bright red and it was a perfect vignette for my great big family – so after our regular session, I suggested that, despite the cold – we move over there and it was fun! Thank you, Mother Nature and the rain!
Although it’s not all 14 members of the family, I wanted to share with you one branch of this family’s tree….
As we rush through the malls and spend hours online stressing to find the perfect gifts for loved ones, remember Jesus and family are the reason for the season. What better gift can you give than the gift of yourself?
